  • Marie Neaves is back at home in Delaware after an exhilarating experience in Cleveland, Ohio, where she competed successfully in several events in the National Senior Olympics.
"I had a great time in Cleveland with fellow Delaware swimmers, triathletes and cyclists," she said.
Neaves was quick to point out the fun she had as well as the success of her fellow Delawareans.
"Henry Dewitt from Sussex County medaled in each of his swimming events receiving two gold and four bronze awards.Karen Wallace of Milford, Maureen White of Sussex County, and Kay Grant of New Castle County earned a total of six ribbons including four gold, one silver and one bronze, respectively.
Neaves also did well for herself in the swimming events, earning a silver medal in the 200-yard breaststroke and one bronze medal in the 50-yard breaststroke. In addition, she won a 5th place ribbon in the 100-yard breaststroke and a 6th place ribbon for the 50-yard backstroke.
She said she was also proud of her accomplishment in her favorite event. "The triathlon, my first event while in Cleveland, was challenging and fun, and I earned a 5th place ribbon in my age group," she said.
Neaves, who's now 65 years young, said she started swimming in June, 2004, at the Dover YMCA, shortly after the loss of her husband. She enjoys swimming for the physical challenge and to help her cope with life's stresses. This was her third National Senior Games, with her first coming in 2005, and again in 2009 in Palo Alto, California, where she did well in the swimming events, winning gold, silver and bronze medals.
Neaves added while her schedule was kept busy with the athletic events and training, there was also time to enjoy the sights in Cleveland. "We did have time to get to meet many athletes from other states, enjoy great dinners, visit the famed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the Science Museum, and generally get to know the host city of Cleveland," she said.
