  • The Middletown-Odessa-Townsend Rotary Club is once again asking community members to donate their used bicycles to Pedals For Progress, a non-profit charity that distributes them to developing countries.
Adult and children’s bicycles in repairable condition can be dropped off at during two collection points scheduled this month.
Bikes can be donated outside the Middletown Walmart Supercenter at 705 Middletown-Warwick Road on Sept. 7 and in the Middletown Crossing Shopping Center in the 300 block of East Main Street on Sept. 14. Both collections will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.
Based in New Jersey, Pedals For Progress has collected and shipped nearly 140,000 bicycles to developing counties in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe since 1989. The bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed to poor, working adults for use as transportation.
Cash donations also are requested to help cover the roughly $40 cost of shipping, rebuilding and distributing each bicycle.
The organization also will accept working portable sewing machines.
All donations are tax-deductible and receipts will be provided at the collection sites.
