  • Appoquinimink scored two touchdowns in the first half, but was stymied throughout the second half in a 21-13 loss to Woodbridge in the DFRC's 4th Annual Kickoff Classic football game Thursday night at Jaguar Stadium.
"No excuses, no excuses at all," said Appoquinimink Head Coach Jeff Weiner. "I credit Woodbridge. There's no doubt about it, they outplayed us. I give them all the credit in the world."
The Jaguars opened the scoring on a 7-yard run by junior quarterback Shane Anderson in the first quarter. The QB sneak ended a 7-play, 55-yard drive. Andrew Jones' extra-point kick gave the home team a 7-0 lead.
The lead was short lived, as Woodbridge senior Anthony Jefferson returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. Brent Adams' PAT knotted the score at 7-7.
Appo regained the lead midway through the second quarter when junior running back Demetrius Word raced 19 yards for a touchdown on a sweep left play. This time, Adams missed the extra point, but the Jags held a 13-7 lead.
The Blue Raiders surged ahead 14-13, when Logan Wescott scored from 20 yards out and Adams added his second extra-point kick.
After some miscue by both teams, Woodbridge built its lead to 21-13 in the third quarter when senior Rick Rayford ran for a 6-yard touchdown and Adams added his third PAT of the contest.
Woodbridge then turned on the defense in the latter stages of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter to stifle the Jaguars offense.
"We made some mistakes early, but those were the correctable type of mistakes," said Woodbridge head coach Ed Manlove.
After the Blue Raiders added to their lead, they were able to concentrate on playing strong, solid defense.
"We told them to play their position. Every kid on there has their position, and that was our game plan," Manlove said. "We did it to a 'T.' Defense isn't rocket science."
Woodbridge, 1-0, will host Polytech Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Appoquinimink, 0-1, travels to Glasgow for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday, Sept. 14.
