  • Alfred G. Waters Middle School math teacher Kathleen Olenderski was recently named as one of 16 members of the Rodel Teacher Council.
Councilmembers serve 18-month terms during which time they advise the Rodel Foundation on critical education reform initiatives, meet with education stakeholders, visit exemplary schools where innovation is transforming instruction and help share those best practices throughout the state.
Olenderski and the other 15 council members were chosen from a pool of more than 80 applicants who were interviewed by a panel of Rodel staff, district administrators and state education leaders.
"Given all of the state level policy shifts happening in Delaware, want to hear classroom teachers to inform our thinking and we hope it provides them with a chance to expand their leadership on some of the most innovative work happening nationally," said Paul Herdman, the CEO and president of the Rodel Foundation of Delaware, a 14-year-old education advocacy group.
Olenderski, the 2013 Teacher of the Year at Waters Middle School and a member of the school's Vision 2015 team, said she's excited to be a member of the Rodel Teacher Council.
"I think the Rodel Foundation is helping to make impactful changes in education and I think this is a wonderful opportunity to a part of that," she said. "I'm looking forward to learning from the other council members, working with local government officials and making positive changes in Delaware."
A Middletown resident and teacher at Waters Middle School for six years, Olenderski earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and middle school math from the University of Delaware in 2008.
