  • Appoquinimink's football team rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime against Delcastle Friday night, but it wasn't enough.
In OT, Delcastle blocked the Jaguars' 32-yard field goal attempt. Then the Cougars drove down the field and scored a touchdown on a deflected pass in the end zone for the 32-26 win.
Delcastle scored first to take a 6-0 lead in the second quarter.
The Jaguars clawed back in front of their home crowd, as Demetrius Word scored on a 63-yard run and then on a 25-yard TD pass from Kevin Banning to give Appoquinimink a 12-6 lead.
The Cougars responded with a touchdown before halftime, and the extra point kick was good for a 13-12 advantage.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, setting up the dramatic final period. Delcastle returned a blocked punt for a TD and added the extra point for a 20-12 lead, and then extended the margin to 26-12 with a touchdown run, but Appo stopped the two point conversion.
Then the Jaguars' Grant Gieseler electrified the home crowd by returning the kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and Andrew Jones added the extra point to make the score 26-19. The Jaguars pulled to within a point at 26-25 with less than a minute to play on a touchdown pass from Word to Emmanuel Kenion. Jones kicked the extra point to tie the game and force overtime, but Delcastle pulled out the victory.
