  • Middletown's volleyball team scored an exciting 3-2 road victory over back-yard rival Appoquinimink Monday night on the Lady Jaguars home court.
"This was an extremely exciting match tonight. When these two teams play, it doesn't matter about the records, it's always going to be an intense, tough match," said Middletown coach Jason Kriedler.
At the start of the match, Appoquinimink looked like they were poised for victory. In the first set, they ran out to a big early lead, but the Lady Cavaliers came storming back to tie the score at 16-16, and then went on a run to claim a 25-18 victory.
In the second set, the Jaguars took a 12-4 lead, then cruised to a 25-13 win to tie the match at one set apiece.
Appo kept the momentum in the third set, winning, but by a closer margin of 25-22.
Early in the fourth set, the momentum began to swing back to the Cavaliers, and Middletown picked up the pace and won the set 25-19, leveling the match at two games apiece.
In the fifth and deciding set, Middletown left no doubt about the outcome. After the score was tied at 2-2, the Cavaliers controlled the court and cruised to a 15-4 victory which clinched the match in their favor.
"This was a tough match, but we played under control even when we fell behind. We recently lost a close match to St. Georges and we talked about it, and we didn't like the way it felt, and I know that helped us in this match because we didn't want to lose another close match," he said.
Middletown is now 5-3 on the season and played Hodgson Vo-Tech on Wednesday. On Monday, the Cavaliers will host Glasgow at 3:30 p.m.
Appoquinimink's record dropped to 4-4. They had a match against William Penn on Wednesday, and they will play at A.I. DuPont on Monday evening at 6 p.m.
