Downtown Middletown merchants will be joining together Thursday to host the sixth-annual Trick-or-Treat on Main event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
    Event Highlights
    1 Trick-or-Treating
"Trick-or-Treat on Main started as a way to get people to come visit our wonderful, historic downtown," said Tracy Skrobot, the manager of the Middletown Main Street Program, which organizes the annual event. "But it's become a very popular alternative or addition to trick-or-treating in the neighborhoods and usually attracts about 1,000 kids and adults."
About 20 downtown businesses will be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters this year, including Dogtown Hot Dogs, Femme Fatale, Purple Sage, Middletown Hardware, First & Little, A Creative Edge, Half Baked Patisserie, Sully's Irish Pub, the Gibby Center for the Arts and others.
Trick-or-Treaters can stop by Cochran Square for a full list of participating businesses.
DJ Jammin' Jeff also will be providing a spooky soundtrack to the night's festivities from the parking lot of Forest Presbyterian Church at 44 W. Main St.
    2 Halloween Costume Contest
Children up to 12 years old, and pets of all shapes and sizes, also will be able to show off their creative outfits during a costume contest at Forest Presbyterian Church, starting at 6:30 p.m.
A $5 pre-registration is required to participate in the contest, which will be judged in four categories: Pets, Little Pumpkins (ages up to 2), Ghoulish Ghosts (ages 3 to 7) and Funky Frankensteins (ages 8 to 12).
Individual and groups will be accepted for the pre-registration price.
Registrations can be made in advance by printing out a form at www.middletownmainstreet.com and dropping it off with the $5 fee at Middletown Town Hall, 19 W. Green St.
Contestant spaces are limited to 25 per category and will be registered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each category.
    3 Pumpkin Decorating Contest
The Gibby Center for the Arts will be sponsoring a Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Contest during Trick-or-Treat on Main.
Pumpkins that are carved, painted or otherwise decorated in advance can be dropped off at The Gibby, 51 W. Main St., between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday or from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Each pumpkin must be accompanied by an entry form that can be found at www.middletownmainstreet.com , as well as a $5 entrance fee.
Page 2 of 2 - Prizes will be awarded in various age groups, including kindergarten to second grade, third to fifth grade, sixth to eighth grade, ninth to twelfth grade and adult.
For safety purposes, pumpkins entered by children in fifth grade and younger should not be carved.
Prizes in each category will be awarded at 7 p.m. on Thursday, with the names of the winners posted on The Gibby's Facebook page.
The pumpkins will remain on display from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
