The dead body that was found in marshland near Route 13 in New Castle Wednesday morning has been identified as a Delaware City man.

This morning, Oct. 25, Delaware State Police said they have identified the victim as John G. Heeney, 49, of Delaware City.

State Police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the body through dental records. An examination and autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner revealed no apparent trauma and no evidence of foul play, police said.

The cause of death is still under investigation.

The body was discovered Wednesday at about 10:50 a.m. by a billboard maintenance crew that was working on a billboard in a field near the 100 block of South DuPont Highway (Route 13).

The unidentified, partially clothed, decomposing skeletal remains were found about 20 feet down a grassy embankment, in a marshy area near the southbound lanes of Route 13.

Police were able to access the remains and worked in coordination with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to remove the body and conduct an autopsy.

Traffic was not affected due to the investigation or recovery of the body.
