  • SHAW ON FITNESS: An All Hallows' Eve workout

  • For All Hallows' Eve, or Halloween as it is commonly called, one my clients and I decided to pay reverence to this special day the best way we know how – a fun and creative work out! For those of you who may not know the true origin of All Hallows' Eve, it is a celebration with Western Christian roots where we honor the spirits of the dead, especially the saints, martyrs, and all the faithfully departed believers. So yes, all that trick or treating, wearing costumes, watching Michael Jackson's Thriller video, listening to Monster Mash, and all the rest of it that we have done for generations really have symbolic and sincere origin.
    With that said, most of you who know me know that I am game for anything, especially something with a true reverence to its origin like All Hallows' Eve. So, in addition to the usual parties and candy, I thought, "What other way could we possibly pay a little homage to this fun holiday we all look forward to?"
    Then it dawned on me, "A Pumpkin Workout"! Yes, you read that correctly – "A Pumpkin Workout." My clients were all game for it, and as you will see in the attached pics, my client Chris Anderson had a lot of fun with this workout. Chris is a fantastic athlete and fitness model and always game for anything. We're definitely kindred spirits in that way. For the workout, I found two of the biggest pumpkins I could find and put Chris through a series of exercises, including pumpkin squat and press, pumpkin bench press, pumpkin swings, pumpkin curls, pumpkin shoulder press, pumpkin walking lunges, and pumpkin crawls. After he completed his series of pumpkin exercises, proving his skill and strength, we topped it off with old fashioned spider crawls. Trust me when I say we had a really good time.
    Working out doesn't always have to be laborious. You'd be surprised how much fun it can be when you add a little creativity to the mix.

    So what's the point of all of this? Besides the sheer fun, unless you've been living under a rock over the past few years, you all have heard of the childhood obesity epidemic that is still running rampant in our country. Futuristic and computerized games have their place, but simple functional movements doing something creative and fun will have even the laziest child up and moving. I'd like to say that childhood obesity is something that secretly crawled into our children while we were sleeping, but the truth is environment plays a very big role in how our kids take care of themselves. So if you're a lazy parent, guess what, you probably won't magically have an active kid; at least not usually. Adults would gain lots of knowledge and good health by doing things that are active and creative.
    Page 2 of 2 - With all of that said, I will leave you with this: Whether you're 2, 25, 50, or 75, we all can become a kid again on Halloween. Arthur Conan Doyle Sr. once said "where there is no imagination, there is no horror." So have a great time this All Hallows' Eve, and be creative with your activity on that day, and the day after that, and the day after that. Your body and mind, and your children will thank you for it.
