John Anthony Higgins, age 71, of Middletown, Delaware, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 30, 2013. He served on the faculty of St. Andrew's School in Middletown for 32 years.

John Anthony Higgins, age 71, of Middletown, Delaware, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 30, 2013. In spite of his life-long struggle with Type I diabetes, he raised a family and pursued his passion—teaching mathematics to young people and adults for 50 years.

John was born in Harrisburg, PA in 1942. After graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1959, he earned a B.S. in Mathematics at Towson State College (1963), an M.S. in mathematics at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (1965), and a Ph.D in mathematics at New Mexico State University in 1971. He served on the faculties of Coppin State College in Baltimore, MD, The Tome School in North East, MD, Chatham Hall in Chatham, VA, Wilmington Christian School in Wilmington, DE, and, for 32 years, St. Andrew's School in Middletown, DE. He also involved himself in a variety of teacher-development programs at the University of Delaware, both as a participant and presenter.

Over the years, John has had a special love for the students, faculty, and staff of St. Andrew's School. Although classroom teaching across the grade levels was the highlight of his career, he also served as Registrar, Director of Studies, and Math Department Head. After his retirement from St. Andrew's in 2012, his hours volunteering there gave him great joy and a sense of purpose.

John has been a devoted husband and father, and he is survived by his wife Lee of 39 years and his daughters Molly Higgins of Kennett Square, PA and Susannah Higgins of Philadelphia, PA. John and his family worshipped at Five Rivers Assembly of God in Elkton, MD where John taught the Adult Sunday School Class with his dear friend, Pastor Jim Murphy. John is also survived by his sister Linda Linfield and her husband Dick and their children, Andrew, Alan, and Daniel, his sister Judy White and her husband Frank and their children Jessica, Michael, and Timothy, his sisters-in-law Jill Hunter and Lyn Cannon, his brothers-in-law R. Daniel Cannon and Jack D. Hunter, Jr., his aunt Marian Mundorff, and his niece Julia Dombrowiak. John was pre-deceased by his mother Ardna Miller and his stepfather, William Miller.

Our deep gratitude is extended to the community of St. Andrew's School and the staff of Middletown Baptist Church who made themselves and their facilities available to us at this difficult time.

The memorial service will be held at the Middletown Baptist Church (419 Armstrong Corner Rd., Middletown) on Saturday, Nov. 9. Family and friends will be greeted at 1 p.m., and the service will begin at 2 p.m. The family suggests donations may be sent to the Food Bank of Delaware (14 Garfield Way, Newark, DE 19713 ) or Sunday Breakfast Mission (110 N. Poplar St., Wilmington, DE 19899). Also, flowers could be arranged by Elana's Florist of Middletown (302-285-0800).
