  • A 23-year-old New Castle man was arrested on drug charges in Middletown on Sunday afternoon, following a brief foot chase.
Kavien Taveras was arrested about 3:15 p.m. in the Middletown Village neighborhood after a local resident reported that he was dealing marijuana in the 100 block of Vincent Circle, according to Middletown Police Chief Henry Tobin III.
When officers responded to the complaint, they spotted a man matching the description given by the caller who was attempting to leave the area, Tobin said.
Following a brief chase, officers took Taveras into custody and reportedly found him carrying nearly 40 grams of marijuana packaged for sale – including an unspecified amount stored in a mason jar – several hundred empty plastic bags and$551 in cash.
Tobin said Taveras also discarded a digital scale during the foot chase.
“We’ve received several complaints about someone selling drugs in the Middletown Village neighborhood recently, and thankfully, someone was willing to notify us when they saw what was going on,” Tobin said. “That’s what allowed us to make an arrest in this case.”
Taveras is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
He is being held at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna on a $5,750 bond, Tobin said.
