  • The Appoquinimink School District launched a free mobile app for smartphones last month in an attempt to better communicate with busy parents on the go.
Available for free at Google Play and iTunes, the app provides community stakeholders with immediate access to district updates, school calendars, staff email directories, cafeteria menus, sports schedules, homework assignments and grades, education games, summer reading assignments and more.
Users also can adjust the settings so they receiving information from only those schools they care about.
"Busy parents don't have time to sit in front of their home computer reading about activities at their children's schools," district spokeswoman Lilian Miles said. "They want to stay in touch and it's our job to keep them engaged and informed. With the new mobile app, they can grab the opportunity to catch up whenever it's convenient, whether that's commuting to work, or while their waiting for kids at soccer games or dance classes."
Miles said the district will continue to add new features to the mobile app over time, possibly including links to clubs and extracurricular activities, a hotline to report bullying, building usage requests, photo albums, the school store and more.
The mobile app was developed by SchoolMessenger at a cost of $4,000 per year, or less than 50 cents per student.
The Apple version of the school district's mobile app is available at:
