  • A sophomore at Appoquinimink High School, Madeline Diez won the title of Miss Wilmington's Outstanding Teen last year while competing in her first-ever pageant. We caught up with her this week to ask her about her surprise win and how's it's affected her life.
Q You go to school in Middletown, so how did you end up competing for the Miss Wilmington Outstanding Teen title?
A It's actually a funny story. I got a call from my friend Mia (Miss Delaware Teen USA) who happened to be there supporting her cousin Kai, the former Miss Wilmington's Outstanding Teen. One of the contestants had dropped out and they needed another contestant so they could crown a winner. I was really excited and agreed to go, but the pageant started in only a few hours. I had never competed in a pageant; therefore I was clueless as to the procedures to follow. In a matter of two hours, I borrowed a dress, filled out the necessary documentation, learned a dance and fitness routine, completed an interview and at the end of the day, I became Miss Wilmington's Outstanding Teen. It was very exciting to be crowned on stage by Kai, the former Miss Wilmington Outstanding Teen.
Q How effect has the title had on your life?
A Now that I have a title, I feel more confident when meeting people. I am currently preparing for an upcoming pageant. I am learning so much and having a great time. I am also enjoying the appearances that I am making as Miss Wilmington's Outstanding Teen. My most recent appearance was at Hockessin Memorial Hall at their Christmas caroling event. I was able to talk to people about my platform and people took many pictures. I felt famous!
Q How will you promote your campaign of helping people with special needs?
A My plans are to commit myself in helping the special needs community in school and around the community because it's something I have a passion for. During my reign, I have devoted myself to the "Best Buddies" program in my school and I am actively working with the group. I also plan to make appearances to promote my platform and get more people involved with the special needs programs and set an example.
Q What are your plans after high school?
A My plans are to finish an undergraduate program and then apply for law school. I want to work towards becoming a special needs attorney advocating for better representation for people with disabilities. I like the fact that I can stand up for the people I believe in and make a positive difference in their lives.
