A Middletown man jailed since June on child pornography charges is facing new accusations that he sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl last year.
Charles H. Hurd Jr., 48, was charged Jan. 1 with three counts of unlawful sexual contact with a child, the Delaware Attorney General's Office announced Thursday.
The assaults alleged occurred at Hurd's home in the 800 block of Woodline Drive in the Middletown Village neighborhood, which is located less than half a mile from Bunker Hill Elementary School and Appoquinimink High School.
The new charges against Hurd stem from an ongoing investigation into the distribution of child pornography that resulted in his arrest last summer, according to Delaware Department of Justice spokesman Jason Miller.
Hurd was arrested at his home June 6, after investigators reportedly determined pornographic images of children were being sent and received from his residence.
Multiple images of child pornography – including an image of a pre-teen girl engaged in a sex act with an adult male – were later allegedly found on computers and other digital media seized from Hurd's home.
It was not immediately clear whether the alleged victim in the sexual assault case was the same child victimized in the pornography found on Hurd's computer.
Following the June raid at his home, Hurd was charged with 25 counts of dealing in child pornography.
He was initially held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Smyrna on a $1.5 million secured bail.
The state attorney general's office said today that Hurd has not been released since his arrest last year.
