A Frederica man was killed late Tuesday evening following a crash on U.S. Route 1, north of Milford.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into an accident on U.S. Route 1 that resulted in the death of a Frederica man.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Jan 28 at the intersection of Route 1 and New Wharf Road, just north of Milford, said division spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Driver Jeffrey L. Akins of Harrington was driving a fully loaded trailer of live chickens westbound on New Wharf Road when he stopped at the intersection with Route 1. As he crossed the roadway, the emergency air line to the trailer malfunctioned, locking the trailer wheels and causing the truck and trailer to come to a stop, blocking the northbound lanes.
Akins tried to drag the trailer out of the road with the tractor but before he could do so, the a Honda CRX operated by Jason D. Johnson, 32, of Frederica, traveling northbound on Route 1, hit the trailer between the rear tandem wheels. The car rode under the trailer, severely damaging the passenger compartment.
Johnson, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 9-year-old stepdaughter, who was in the right rear passenger seat, was taken by emergency medical crews first to Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, and then to A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital, where she is listed in serious but stable condition. The girl also was properly restrained, Fournier said.
Akins, who was properly restrained, was not injured.
Bay Road northbound at New Wharf Road was closed for approximately three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
