  • The Milford Buccaneers jumped out to a big lead and held on to dethrone defending state champion St. Georges 42-20 in the Division II dual meet state wrestling championship Tuesday night at Smyrna High School.
Meanwhile, Smyrna won its second consecutive team title in Division I with a 43-17 victory over archrival Caesar Rodney.
In the Division II final, Milford won the first four matches and built a 21-0 lead before the Hawks could earn any points as Barton Dalious (132 pounds) and John Badger (138) defeated the Hawks' Tony Immediato and Raymond Brock. Milford's Myron Price (145) won a close decision over Dominic Susi, and Chase Taylor (152) pinned Patrick King at 2:55 for the Bucs.
"Getting off to that fast start certainly helped our momentum," said Milford coach Dan Rigby. "We were well prepared, as we knew we would have a tough match against another good team, we had every scenario planned out, so we knew we would be ready."
With the score 21-0, the Hawks clawed back into the match with victories by Joe Tharp (160), Chase Walls (170), and Rocco Hladney (182), making the score 21-11.
But the Bucs would not be denied on this frigid February evening. Milford would go on to win four of the next five matches, so by the time the Hawks' Jarek Lugo defeated Anthony Donovan 4-0 in the 132-pound match, the Bucs had wrapped up the state title.
"After the coin toss, they got the momentum early, and we fought back later on, but we couldn't get it all back," said St. Georges coach Nate Pellegrini.
St. Georges advanced to the finals by defeating Sanford 53-24 in the first round and then soaring over Hodgson 47-15 in the semifinals.
Milford, the top seed in the six team event, earned a first-round bye and advanced to the finals after knocking off Lake Forest 44-16 in the semifinals.
