New Castle County government offices and libraries are closed today, March 3, due to snow.
New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon has decided to close County offices on Monday due to the National Weather Service and AccuWeather forecasts calling for significant snowfall in most of the county, according to a county press release.
The closing of New Castle County government offices also includes all libraries and the Absalom Jones Senior Center and Art Studio.
Only essential personnel, such as county police officers, 911 Call Center operators and paramedics, are to report. Many County employees have been equiped with 4X4 vehicles, including Chevrolet Tahoes and Humvees in the New Castle County Police Department.
Delaware Gov. Jack Markell and Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams also made the calls to close state and city offices, respectively, as well.
The governor has issued a State of Emergency and a Level 1 Driving warning in the State of Delaware as of midnight. According to State Code, "A "Level 1 Driving Warning" shall mean that any person operating a motor vehicle when a Level 1 Driving Warning has been activated shall exercise extra caution in the operation of their motor vehicle.
"Nonessential employees, regardless of whether employed by a public or private entity, are encouraged not to operate a motor vehicle on the State's roadways when a Level 1 Driving Warning has been activated, unless there is a significant safety, health or business reason to do so."
