  • Three teenagers were hospitalized Thursday afternoon following a two-car crash on U.S. Route 13, north of Middletown.
The crash occurred about 3:10 p.m. when a 1997 Plymouth Breeze heading east on Hyetts Corner Road attempted to cross the southbound lanes of the highway, where it was struck by a flatbed tractor-trailer, according to Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day.
The 17-year-old Newark boy who was driving the car was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition, Day said.
His passengers, a 17-year-old girl from Bear and a 16-year-old boy from Newark, also were taken to Christiana Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Osmar Lagraba, a 42-year-old Virginia man who was driving the tractor-trailer, was not injured, Day said.
All four people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, he said.
An initial investigation of the crash indicates the driver of the Plymouth had stopped at a stop sign on Hyetts Corner Road before attempting to cross the southbound lanes before making a left turn onto the northbound lanes of Route 13, Day said.
The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
The southbound lanes of Route 13 were closed for about three hours while troopers investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
