  • The Appoquinimink girls’ tennis team gave it a battle but dropped a 5-0 decision to the Charter School of Wilmington Tuesday afternoon.  “We knew it was going to be a tough battle today, but Charter is a very good tennis team,” said Lady Jaguar coach Brain Coday.
In the first singles match, Charter freshman Grace Shiau defeated Jaguar senior Nana Banahene in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.In the second singles, the outcome was the same, as Charter’s Vaish Kundarakaram defeated Appo’s junior Sarah Shackelford 6-0, 6-0.
The third singles match didn’t have any drama as to the outcome. There was, however, some standing water on the court that caused the match to be played on a dry court at the conclusion of the first singles. Ariel Friedlander easily defeated sophomore Amanda Fails by the scores of 6-1, 6-0.
Friedlander said she had a tough time with her opponent. “I had a hard time with her style of play. She hit everything right back at me, but I prefer when an opponent moves the ball around and hits changeups so I can track the ball down and return it.”
In the double matches, the team of Carly Fabian and Sandra Chen defeated the Jaguars’ Rachel Delp and Neha Divi 6-0, 6-0. In the second doubles match, Sudeepti Trivedi and Sydney Procak defeated Rachel DiDonato and Alexandra Tapaganac 6-2, 6-0.
“We do have a strong team this year, and we have adapted very well to the weather conditions,’ said Charter coach Al Thompson.  The team is practicing well and coming together as a unit.”
Charter is 1-0 on the season and will play Brandywine on the road Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Appoquinimink is 1-1 and will host Newark on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and they will take on Archmere Academy on the road on Friday at 3:45 p.m.
