  • Middletown High FFA excels at state convention

  • The Middletown High School Future Farmers of America chapter achieved high honors at the 84th Annual Delaware FFA Convention at the University of Delaware on March 26 and March 27.

  • The Middletown High School Future Farmers of America chapter achieved high honors at the 84th Annual Delaware FFA Convention at the University of Delaware on March 26 and March 27.
    Two Middletown High students were elected to state offices, including David Townsend, who became the new treasurer for the Delaware FFA Association, and Stanley Gaffrey, who was elected state sentinel.
    Townsend and Gaffrey also were among the six MHS FFA members to earn the State FFA Degree, the highest degree bestowed by the state association. Others local students who earned the degree included Sara Bednash, Megan Cannelongo, Darion Gregg and Courtney Lester.
    Three chapter teams earned first-place awards in various competitions, including: the Meats Evaluation Team of Olivia Laird, Mauri Hainsworth, Andrew Wyttenbach and Darion Gregg; the Milk Quality and Products Team of Lauren Melancon, Alana Hodge, Lauren Berry and Rachel Lintz; and the Floriculture Team of Katie Platt, Ryan Vansant, Erin Rinaldi and Susan Lin.
    Several chapter members also won honors in the Career Development speaking events. Brandon Dawson won first-place in extemporaneous speaking, Erin Fogarty won second-place in prepared public speaking, Ariana Gaston won third place in creed speaking, while Macie Pennington took home fourth place in creed speaking.
    Teams and members who earned first-place honors will represent Delaware at the National FFA Convention & Expo in Louisville, Ky., from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.
