  • The Middletown girls’ soccer team won its fifth game of the season following an exciting, action-packed 2-1 victory over cross-town rival Appoquinimink Wednesday evening.
The Lady Cavaliers moved the ball well early in the first half, but the young and resilient Appoquinimink defense withstood the charge.
Middletown finally got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute on a goal by freshman Alyssa Poarch, who got the ball on a rare defensive lapse by the Lady Jaguars, then raced down the left sideline and ripped a nice shot past Appo’s junior goal keeper Kelsey Fitzpatrick.
It appeared the Cavaliers would maintain the slim lead going into halftime, until Lady Jags’ sophomore Erica Sieben scored on a Penalty Kick in the 35th minute to tie the score at 1-1.
Play was fairly even throughout much of the well-played second half, with both Appo and Middletown hitting the crossbar, and having numerous scoring opportunities each.
Finally, in the 64th minute, Cavalier senior Tiffany Johnson was in the right place at the right time, and knocked in a header off a corner kick for the 2-1 lead. Freshman Macie  Pennington was credited with an assist on the play.
Middletown is now 5-1 on the season and will host St. Andrew’s Saturday evening at 6:15 p.m.
Appoquinimink dropped to 1-3-1 this year. They will play against Padua on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Hockessin Soccer Turf Field.
