  • Fourteen of the Appoquinimink School District’s finest educators will attend a special gala dinner in Odessa next week.
But only one will be named the district’s 2015 Teacher of the Year.
“I don’t think anyone attends the gala thinking it’s going to be them, because there’s just such high quality teachers there in the room with you,” said Appoquinimink High School French teacher Lea Wainwright, the district’s 2014 Teacher of the Year who went on to earn Delaware Teacher of the Year honor last fall. “I think most of the time, everyone is trying to guess who it’s going to be.”
The process of choosing a new Teacher of the Year began in January when nominations were solicited from school staff, students, parents and community members.
This year, 238 of the district’s nearly 600 teachers received nominations.
Qualified nominees interested in pursuing the honor were required to submit a resume, three reference letters and essay on their teaching philosophy before undergoing interviews with a selection committee at their own school.
From that pool, a teacher of the year was named at each of the district’s school last month.
Those building-level winners are now undergoing another round of interviews as a part of the district-level competition.
The following is a list of those teachers currently in the running for the Appoquinimink School District’s 2015 Teacher of the Year:
