Middletown improved to 9-0 after beating Newark 3-2 in girls tennis Monday afternoon.

The Middletown girls’ tennis team remained undefeated after beating host Newark 3-2 Monday afternoon in an exciting and well-played high school match.

It appeared the Lady Cavaliers spotless record was in jeopardy after first singles Latify Hinaway lost a tough match to Lady Jackets’ number one Alyesha Abdullah 6-1, 6-1.

Abdullah gained the upper hand early in the match and never relinquished her advantage.

The situation became increasingly tense for the visitors, as Newark’s Second Singles Maryam Wilson defeated Kaitlyn Weaver 7-6(3), 6-4. Weaver battled for every point, but could not keep up with Wilson in the second set.

Middletown’s Third Singles Justice Mallard edged her opponent 6-4, 6-4, which finally gave the Cavaliers some momentum on the courts.

In the doubles matches, the Cavaliers team of Tatiana Hines and Anna Mooney defeated Newark’s Grace Tackett and Sophia Marianiello 6-0, 6-1.

In the second doubles match, Middletown’s Alana Hodges and Chelsea Moyer gave the Lady Cavs the victory after defeating Bethany Hall and Himali Patel in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

“Our strength this year is with our first singles player Alyesha Abdullah. She has played vey well for us all season,” said Newark coach Alex Odren. “We have had a good season so far this year, considering we only won four matches last season,” he added.

The 9-0 Lady Cavaliers next matches are Thursday at home against Charter School of Wilmington, and Friday at home against St. Mark’s. Both matches start at 3:30 p.m.

The Lady Jackets are now 8-2. After playing McKean on Tuesday, the team will face Christiana on the road on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
