  • Blues for the Cure, an annual fundraising event that contributes 100 percent of its earnings to Relay for Life of Middletown, will host its 2014 concert from 1 to 8 p.m., Sunday, May 19.
The concert event was founded by several local blues musicians dedicated to the American Cancer Society cause. Now seven years old, the event has turned into a much-anticipated and well-attended day of music and camaraderie for cancer survivors, their families, the regional blues community, local fans and area businesses. This year’s event is expected to pull in more than 300 blues fans, survivors and their loved ones.
“We started this as a fundraising event to support Middletown Relay for Life,” said Blues for the Cure Board Member Joe Antonio, who also plays with Barrelhouse. “It was founded purely as an opportunity for us in the local blues community to express our love and support of our family and friends battling cancer. We also get to support the survivors and remember those who we’ve lost.”
This year’s lineup includes Bad Avenue, Toney Rocks, the Billy Pierce Band, Lower Case Blues, The Smokin’ Joes and Barrelhouse.
The day is not just about blues music, though. There’s also a silent auction and raffles. Someone will walk away with an autographed Fender American Stratocaster with a hard case. Someone else will go home with a Craftsman Harley Davidson tool chest courtesy of the Sears Hometown store in Middletown. Guitar autographs include, amongst others, Sonny Landreth, Marcia Ball, Cyril Neville and Devon Allman.
