Caesar Rodney defeats Appoquinimink 15-4 in DIAA boys' lacrosse action
Caesar Rodney overcame a sluggish first half to defeat Appoquinimink 15-11 in DIAA boys’ lacrosse action.
The Jaguars, who were recently trounced by the Riders, played a strong first half and took a 7-4 lead.
“We knew we played well, but there was still another half to play,” said Appoquinimink coach Chris Rutter, who remained optimistic about the future, despite the loss. “We learned how to play a good team, and we learned what it takes to win a tournament game,” he said.
The second half started as planned for the Riders, as Sean McLeish scored a quick goal to cut the lead to 7-5. But about 15 seconds later, Nick Ferrara scored for the Jaguars.
At that point, the game slowed down a bit until David Schmidt scored at 6:21, followed by four more Riders goals to give CR a 10-8 lead late in the third quarter. Ferrara scored at 1:35 to cut the Appo deficit to 10-9.
Early in the fourth, The Jaguars tied the score at 10-10, but the Riders would score five consecutive goals to put the game away. Appo would score a goal with 12.2 seconds remaining, but the Riders held on for the 15-11 victory.
Riders’ coach Matt Faircloth said his team started out sluggish, “But we made some minor adjustments to our offense. That first goal in the second half was important, but in the playoffs ever goal and every save is also important.”
Caesar Rodney now advances to the semi-final round of the lacrosse championships.
The Jaguars finished the regular season with a 13-2 record. On Wednesday, they defeated Milford 14-5.
