On Friday night, No. 2 Caravel Academy ended the Cinderella run from No. 6 St. Georges Tech, defeating the Hawks 3-0 to advance to the Division II Girls’ Soccer State Championship game.

Both teams played the opening minutes on Friday night cautiously, as most of the play was between the 30s through most of the first half.

The first tally of the game came off the foot of freshman Emily Sweeny on a nice feed from Rachel Owens at the 39th minute of the first half to give Caravel a 1-0 lead. The lead would hold for the rest of the half, and the Lady Bucs took a 1-0 advantage into half time.

Caravel wasted little time pulling away from St. Georges Tech in the second half, scoring in the 46th minute off a goal from Kateland Fullerton to go up 2-0. The lead would hold steady at 2-0 until the 71st minute when Owens scored off a Fullerton feed to give Caravel a 3-0 lead with time winding down.

While neither team was able to pepper the net on Friday night, Caravel made the most of their 12 shots getting three behind Lady Hawks’ goalkeeper Carly Buchanan who finished the day with eight saves. Meanwhile, on the other side Caravel’s Syndney Badel made stops on all five of St. Georges Tech’s shots.

In the second Division II semifinal Friday No. 1 Archmere Academy defeated No. 4 Friends in a thrilling contest that went to penalty kicks. Tied 1-1 after two overtimes, the Lady Auks topped Friends 5-3 in PK’s to advance to the state title game.

No. 1 Archmere Academy vs. No. 2 Caravel Academy will be the first of a soccer championship doubleheader on Monday at Smyrna High School starting at 5:00 p.m. with the Division I championship between No. 2 Padua and No. 4 Caesar Rodney to follow.
