    2011: Year of death for the last combat veteran of World War I. Australian Claude Stanley Choules, who served in the English Navy (and later Australian Navy), died in May of that year at the age of 110.
    This Day in History
    June 28, 1914: Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo by Bosnia Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. The act led to Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war against Serbia a month later, triggering the start of World War I.
