  • Fifth graders in the Appoquinimink School District outperformed their counterparts in all other school districts on the reading portion of the Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System (DCAS). Appoquinimink fourth graders also outperformed everyone else in social studies.
The Delaware Department of Education has been issuing the proficiency test since 2010 to students in the third to 10th grades.
“Our fifth and fourth graders are the top in the state,” said Lillian Miles, Public Information Officer at the Appoquinimink School District.
Compared to previous years, the Appoquinimink School District’s DCAS results changed slightly, but remained positive.
“The state is flat this year…but we made strong gains,” said Miles.
Next year the state will use a new system called Smarter Balance Assessment to measure performance.
Look for more details on the DCAS results and the new system next week here on the website and in the Middletown Transcript newspaper.
