  • The work of local artist Bryan Davis is on display in the Delaware Division of the Arts Mezzanine Gallery through Friday. The solo exhibition is a showcase of original works, offering a range of complex visuals comprised of realistic imagery.
In his “artist statement” for the Biggs Museum of Art in Dover, Davis said that he “aims to create iconic images. I want the composition, color and subject matter to work in a way that is irresistible to the viewer.”
In order to achieve his goals, the human figure is often presents in dramatic, curious and unexpected compositions. Some of Davis’ most thought-provoking pieces have the artist working in the vein of “magic realism,” using the human figure juxtaposed against a background suffused with peril.
At other times, Davis draws on his education in illustration. The illustration-influenced pieces are mysterious and complex but remain accessible and relevant for a contemporary audience.
Davis resides full-time in Middletown, where he divides his time between “painting and paying the mortgage.” In addition to the DDA exhibition, Davis has also shown his work at the Society of Illustrators, the Maryland Federation of Art Circle Gallery, the Rehoboth Art League and several other locations. His awards and honors include an honorable mention at the Rehoboth Art League’s 2012 Regional Juried Exhibiton as well as inclusion in nearly 10 other shows.
