    Aug. 16, 1942: The two-man crew of the Navy’s anti-submarine blimp L-8 disappears without a trace on a routine mission off the California coast. The blimp itself drifts back over land late in the day, crash-landing near San Francisco. No explanation for the missing crew has ever been determined.
