  • Police investigating backhoe accident in Middletown

  • A Middletown man is in critical condition at Christina Hospital after the backhoe he was driving crashed into the rear of a building under construction.
    The accident happened yesterday at approximately 3 p.m. near North Scott Street and West Lake Street.
    Middletown Police Department, Middletown Volunteer Hose Company, and New Castle County Paramedics responded to a call about a CPR in progress.
    Upon arrival, rescue crews observed a Case backhoe that crashed into the rear of a building that was under construction. The 53-year-old male backhoe operator who remained unconscious was transported to the hospital.
    The New Castle County Police Departments Traffic Services Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
    The damage to the building was minimal and the Town of Middletown Code Enforcement responded to the scene and deemed the building safe.
    North Scott Street was closed for approximately three hours as officers conducted their investigation.
    The backhoe operator is currently listed in critical condition; the cause of the accident appears to be medically related, police said.
