An E-Waste recycling event is coming to Barley Mill Plaza this weekend.

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority is working in conjunction with State Reps. Deborah Hudson (R-Greenville) and Nick Manolakos (R-Limestone Hills) to hold a one-time free recycling event for used electronic equipment, including personal computers, cell phones, laptops, video toys, televisions, VCRs and more. The event is not intended for commercial disposal.

“This was at the request of some state representatives,” DSWA Manager of Recycling, Rich Von Stetten said. “They wanted a place in the vicinity that was convenient.”

The event has been in the works for months, the organizers just had to find a place and time that worked for everyone, he said.

“We had talked about this last spring,” Von Stetten said. “Working with Rep. Hudson, we were able to set something up. It is open to everyone, not just people who live in that area. There is definitely a demand: Hudson was getting a lot of calls.”

If You Go...
What: E-waste recycling
Where: Barley Mill Plaza parking lot, near the Route 141/Barley Mil Road gate.
When: Saturday, Oct. 24, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Info: 800-404-7080, dswa.com.

There are other 24 “E-Waste” locations, but this event is all about accessibility, he said

“It’s difficult to find an on-going site. During our household waste events (Nov. 7 at Frawley Stadium), we have a time where people can drop off their electronic goods.”

“You want to see that electronic waste doesn’t end up in the landfill,” he said, so people should take full advantage of the event. “The more convenient it is, the more people will participate. It is rain or shine and in the early morning hours, so the rest of the afternoon people can do other things.”

If there is wide participation, it may become a more frequent event, he said.
