Raising a teenager is difficult, but raising a teenager intent on running away from her magic school in order to perform a dangerous ritual that will bind her werewolf side completely? That's hell, as Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) is about to find out on the next episode of The Originals.

When news that Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) has run off with a boy from school reaches him, Klaus is going to enter "complete and utter" protective dad mode according to consulting producer Jeffrey Lieber.

"He was an absentee father between the period of time between Season 4 and Season 5," Lieber tells TV Guide. "Then immediately upon seeing her and seeing who she's become... she has qualities that are absolutely his, and so he pretty immediately goes into father mode. Once he goes into father mode, he goes through it the way that Klaus does, which is all in and with every bit of his passion, anger and sense of protection that he has."

Anyone who's seen Klaus act in defense of his family knows that his idea of protection typically comes with blood, gore and a whole lot of death, which could spell bad news for poor Roman (Jedidiah Goodacre). Fortunately, Caroline Forbes (Candice King) is there to talk him out of anything too drastic.

In addition to providing Klaus with some context for why Hope ran off with the resident bad boy (Caroline's got plenty of experience there), Caroline also gets to have a pretty frank discussion with her former flame about their history together.

"Every time they get together, they kind of turn a new page in trying to figure out what they mean to each other and how they feel about each other," Lieber says. "Because it's steeped in this crisis, they have to sort of toggle back and forth between 'what's going on with us,' and 'what's going on with the world.' They have to also simultaneously have the relationship they had in the past, the relationship they're currently having and then solve the problem at hand. I think it's a complicated relationship of 'what is our dynamic now?' and 'how do we solve the problem that's in front of us?'"

The Originals airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
