The Premier Centre for the Arts will showcase two talented musical groups in “Triple Threat Winter Performance” this weekend. Showtime begins at 8 p.m. and runs from Friday, Jan. 20 through Sunday, Jan. 22.
Overview
A group of juniors (between the ages of 8 to 14) and seniors (between the ages of 14 to 18) will perform numbers from classic productions such as “Westside Story” and “Oliver,” as well as sing an array of popular songs from the likes of Elton John to Bruno Mars. Triple Threat Winter Performance will start with a group number from both the juniors and seniors, followed by individual performances from each group, capped off with another group number for the show’s finale.

“It’s really neat to see the younger group versus the older group, and the talent in both,” said Candice Castro, the show’s acting and staging director, who selected the show’s playlist in August, along with Cody Munzert (vocal director) and Samantha Kiser (choreography director).
Connecting to character
As the acting and staging director, Castro is tasked with helping the cast with blocking and character development, in which the latter has been her greatest challenge.
“With their ages, sometimes the material we might pick, the tone of the song might be something they never experienced before,” said Castro of Middletown, adding some of the selections in the show center around themes of romance and heartbreak.
She tries to help performers connect to the mood of whatever song they’re singing by having them relive similar experiences they’ve encountered in their life – through asking them questions like, “Have you ever gone away from camp or missed your mom or best friend?”
Despite the difficulty of helping the cast with character development, Castro says she’s proud of how they’ve run with her advice.
“Just the talent level of these kids is just phenomenal,” she said. “They do a really good job.”
