The Brick Hotel, which sits on the corner of Main and Second Streets in Odessa, was once a hot spot for local residents who wanted to spend a night out on the town and enjoy the company of good friends. Now, the Historic Odessa Foundation is ready to recreate that ambience with Tavern Night.
With a night chock full of entertainment and delicious fare, the foundation is looking to bring community members together and show off what used to be a posh establishment.
Debbie Buckson, executive director of the foundation, said this isn’t just a one-night event. It’s a preview of what’s to come. The foundation plans to open a colonial-style tavern and restaurant within the next year.
“The hotel was a fabulous tavern where I’m sure people were having a rollicking good time,” she said. “We want to recreate that and get people excited for what’s to come.”
This month’s Tavern Night will feature Delaware singer-song writer Todd Chappelle, who’s best known for his song, “I’m From Delaware,” and the 18th-century dance group Dover English Country Dancers, who plan to get people up and moving.
“Eighteenth-century dancing sounds really stuffy, but it’s actually not at all,” Buckson said. “It’s fun to see people really embrace it.”
Aside from dancing, guests at Tavern Night can expect dinner with all the fixings, including a mashed potato bar, Clams Casino, plum tomatoes stuffed with chicken salad, wine and hard cider.
Buckson said just because the event revolves around a tavern-like setting doesn’t mean children aren’t welcome.
“It’s certainly open to families,” she said. “Everything we do is open to children. They can have a really good time, too.”
She said the point of hosting events like these is to spread awareness about the historical museum and to get the community members involved.
“We’re so much more than a historic house museum,” Buckson said. “We want the community to engage with us and see we’re not boring. We’re fun. People can have a wonderful evening of fun, all while supporting a non-profit organization.”
