What if Coldplay, Michael Jackson and LMFAO all played on the same bill? For just $12, you can find out when the Premier Centre for the Arts returns with its “Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival” Cabaret this weekend. The show will kickoff tonight at 8 p.m.

‘Rock’ around the clock
“Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival” allows its cast of 16 singers (pre-teens to 20-somethings) to perform four group numbers accompanied by a live band, interspersed with solo rendition offerings of their favorite songs. Directed by Mary Dina, audiences can expect to hear tunes by artists and bands such as: Coldplay, Joan Jett, Brittney Spears, Michael Jackson and Selena Gomez.

During the group numbers (comprised of “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay; “Dirty Diana” by Michael Jackson; “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve; and “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO) the cast, will also perform fast, yet simple, dance steps to add more flavor to the show. They’ll also be dressed in costumes inspired by each artist they’re interpreting.

Despite the show’s name, the production isn’t limited to rock selections since the PCA’s staff recognizes the cast – especially its youngest members – also enjoy singing other genres of music.

“There are newer artists that are catchy and kids in this production like that,” Dina said.

Right off the bat, Jill Kairis (a sophomore at Pencader Charter High School) knows that “Party Rock Anthem” is going to be a crowd favorite.

“That’s a really fun song,” Kairis said. “That will get the people really excited. It’s like a super- popular song.”

Rehearsal overview
Considering the number of moving parts in a production like “Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival” would prove challenging for any director to manage, the fact the Dina can only host two rehearsals with the cast doesn’t help, as it also puts a little pressure on them, as well.

“It’s crazy only having two rehearsals because we don’t have much time and we have to pull everything together so quickly,” said Kairis, who added rehearsals are limited because both Dina and the cast have busy schedules. “But it always comes together in the end.”

“It’s crazy only having two rehearsals because we don’t have much time and we have to pull everything together so quickly,” said Kairis, who added rehearsals are limited because both Dina and the cast have busy schedules. “But it always comes together in the end.”

As a solution, the two rehearsals, which are three hours each, are organized like this: the first session features a run through of the group numbers and choreography, while the second session focuses on the cast singing their solo pieces.

‘Walking on Sunshine’
Kairis looks forward to singing Katrina & the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine” for her solo piece in the show.

“It’s a happy upbeat song and I thought that it would suit me well,” said Kairis, who sang “Friday” by Rebecca Black at last year’s cabaret.

For her attire, Kairis says she’s going to dye her hair black, rock some “big jewelry” with “whacky designs” and don a “crazy outfit” that she’s yet to pick out.

And while Kairis is a fan of classic rock, she says singing “Walking on Sunshine” caters to her voice a lot better than singing a tune by The Beatles or Pink Floyd.

“I’d love to do a Beatles selection, but that couldn’t happen,” she said. “I’m not a guy.”
