Sharon Hart is ready to paint the town (hot) pink.

The Middletown breast cancer survivor has teamed up with the American Cancer Society and several local businesses to help raise money and awareness for the sickness with the Middletown Hot Pink Project.

More than a dozen businesses have agreed to have specials or special events where part of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society and Making Strides, Hart said.

“We will be visiting merchants and distributing hot pink bows as well as distributing literature,” said Carla Briccotto of Middletown, who is also assisting with the project.

Because of her yearlong battle with breast cancer, events like the Middletown Hot Pink Project are close to Hart’s heart.

The original Hot Pink project began in Newark four years ago, with two women who just wanted to make people more aware of breast cancer.

“They went to different business and each year it gets bigger,” Hart said.

So far, some of the businesses to sign on in Middletown are Immediato’s, Louis Marie Bridal and Roma’s Pizza.

Immediato’s will host a “Pink Pasta Night” where a percentage of the proceeds will be donated and Louis Marie Bridal will donate a certain amount of money based off of the dresses the sell on certain days.

One hundred percent of the money raised will go towards the American Cancer Society and Making Strides, Hart said.

“I hope people will become more aware of how important pre-testing screening is for breast cancer, and get the public to know what the American Cancer Society has to offer for patients, family members and the rest of the public,” she said. “It’s not only research, but they also have support groups and more to offer than many people realize.”

As the years go on, Hart said they hope to get more involvement.

Some students from Appoquinimink and Middletown High Schools will help distribute the pink ribbons in the stores and on the lampposts to fulfill their community service hours.

The Hot Pink Project will last through October.
