The next G.I.R.L.S. Teen Summit will be held Friday, April 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wilmington Job Corps at 9 Vandever Avenue in Wilmington.
Two hundred and fifty children die from injury every week in the United States. Someone suffers a traumatic brain injury every five minutes, and almost all these injuries and deaths are preventable.
The summit will feature representatives from Christiana Care’ s Trauma Program presenting ThinkFirst, a program that partners trauma healthcare professionals and young people who have survived severe injury. This program empowers young people with the knowledge that they can prevent injuries to if they use their minds to protect their bodies.
Young women will have the opportunity to hear the personal story from a local young woman about how her decisions led to her life-threatening injuries, the difficulties of rehabilitation, and the problems she continues to face from a traumatic brain injury.
They will also hear from a local mother who lost her son to gun violence. Through these two speakers the audience will gain an understanding of how the decisions they make affect not just their lives but the lives of all those who care about them, and that these affects last a lifetime.
