Friday, May 1
     • Good Will Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will host a Basket Bingo at 7 p.m. at Fourth and South streets, New Castle.
    Tickets will be $20 for 20 games with extra cards for sale at $10 a pack. Also for sale will be 50/50 chances, two Longaberger Basket chances, and food and soft drinks.
    Tickets will be available at the door.
    • The Advisory Council of the M.O.T. Jean Birch Senior Center will hold an Antique Appraisal Show.
    Local appraisers will provide information and education on glassware, jewelry, collectibles, time pieces, pottery, coins and more. No buying or selling will be done. Each appraisal will cost $3 or two for $5. Proceeds will benefit the Advisory Council/M.O.T. Jean Birch Senior Center.

    • The 2009 May Market will be held on the Green in New Castle from 9 a.m to 7 p.m.
    The sale will feature plants, herbs, baked goods, demonstrations, Kids Corner, white elephant sale, Miss Kitty’s “Our Garden to Your Garden” bargains, quilt raffle, jewelry, books, refreshments and more.

    • Beav’s Comics in Middletown is one of thousands of comic book shops around the world that will celebrate Free Comic Book Day, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    • Bring your family to learn about the salt marsh and to see what animals live in the brackish water on the Green and Market Square in historic New Castle, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
     Stop by the Boardwalk Trail anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Someone will be on the trail with dip nets and information about the salt marsh.
    • An Architectural Salvage and Antiques Sale will be held all day with a live auction at 11 a.m. on the Green in New Castle.
    The event will feature hardware, doors, windows, ironworks, mantels and other unique items salvaged from renovations to the historic home being incorporated in the library expansion, plus furniture and more donated by local residents.

    • St. Georges will host a Spring Flea Market and Community Day Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds next to the St. Georges Historical Society’s Church Building Community Center on Main Street in North St. Georges.
    The event is sponsored by the Historical Society for the benefit of the center and library. There will be face painting, flowers, T-shirts, wagon rides, baked goods, games and more.
    An open house will be held in the church building, where Dale Ringler will play the pipe organ.

    • The White Clay Creek Fest will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark.
    The event will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bi-State Preserve. Enjoy the scenic, recreational, historic and natural resource values of the creek valley. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a live band and lots of great activities.
    This event is free, but park entrance fees are in effect.

    • Action-packed suspense and intrigue await at the Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library at 2 p.m., when the Big Radio Players will recreate a 1940s radio show of the classic detective novel, “The Maltese Falcon.”
    Be part of the live audience and follow Sam Spade on the chase for that infamous bird and those who will stop at nothing to claim it.
    This program is free and appropriate for families and children older than 10. For more information, call the library at 378-8838.
    • The Tri-State Bird Rescue will hold an open house of its facilities, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.
    The community is invited to tour their facilities, learn about their work to rehabilitate injured, orphaned and oiled native wild birds, and have a lot of fun in the process, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.
    Volunteers will lead tours of the facilities, giving the public a closer look at how Tri-State treats the wildlife in their care. There will be many children’s activities and attendees will have the chance to meet local celebrity mascots, including Delaware Technical & Community College’s Terry Hawk and University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Harry the Hawk.
    There will be a variety of food available.
    Admission is free, but donations of white tissues and toilet paper — which are used to help care for baby birds, will be accepted.

    • The Dover Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Donald Buxton, will present its annual Dover Days Pops Concert at 3 p.m. at the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover.
    To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the orchestra will perform a program of popular Latin music.
    Admission for adults is $20, and $15 for seniors, students and military members. To reserve sets, call (302) 270-1903. Tickets will be available at the Schwartz Center Box Office one hour before the performance. Credit cards will not be accepted.

    • The Sixth Annual Spring Bike Fest will b e held from 1 to 5 p.m. at Bayside Landing and Park, Rock Hall, Md.
    Admission is $3 per bike and includes a pig roast, live music, cold beer, giveaways, slow ride games, 50/50 raffle, voting for your favorite bike and trophies for eight different classes, vendors and great local food.
    Proceeds benefit Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company.
