Delaware State Police have released details about the fatal accident involving a pedestrian who was hit by a tractor trailer on Route 1 near Smyrna on Monday.
At 12:31 p.m., James Leggett, 66, of Yeadon, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2016 Kenworth tractor and flatbed trailer south on Del. Route 1 at Paddock Road just north of Smyrna.
For an unknown reason, the tractor trailer drifted slightly onto the right shoulder of the road, according to State Police Master Cpl. Jeffrey R. Hale.
A 64-year old Laurel man who was parked on the right shoulder had just exited the driver's side of a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup, and was walking toward the front of the pickup.
The tractor trailer struck the left side of the pickup and knocked the Laurel man into the right lane of southbound Route 1.
The tractor trailer stopped just south of the crash.
The Laurel man was declared dead at the scene, Hale said. His name is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.
Leggett, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
The southbound lanes of Route 1 were closed for about two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
