The Division of Public Health Diabetes and Heart Disease Prevention and Control Program will offer a free program beginning Aug. 14 to help those with diabetes better manage their health: the Diabetes Self-Management Program for Delawareans with type 2 diabetes.

The program can help you improve A1c and prevent and/or delay complications.

Meetings of the six-session diabetes self-management workshop will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 14, 21 and 28 and Sept. 11, 18 and 25 at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center, 205 E. Hampden Road, Middletown.

Workshops comprise 12-16 participants and are facilitated from a detailed manual by two trained peer leaders.

Subjects covered include techniques to deal with the symptoms of chronic disease, fatigue, pain, depression and stress; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating; appropriate use of medication; making action plans; working effectively with health care providers; and problem solving.

Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.”
