The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) will temporarily close U.S. Route 301 between Marl Pit Road and Old Schoolhouse Road for four nights next week for the construction of the new Route 301 toll road.
DelDOT announced the closure will start on Monday, Aug. 21, and end on Thursday, Aug. 24, on existing Route 301, also called Summit Bridge Road. The road will only be closed at night at that specific location from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The northbound detour on 301 will be Marl Pit to U.S. Route 13 to Route 896 (Boyds Corner Road) and back to existing 301. The southbound detour on 301 will be 896 to Route 13 to Marl Pit Road and back to existing 301.
The closure is for the “installation of bridge beams for the new bridge over the existing U.S. 301,” said a DelDOT news release.
When completed, the new 301 will be a toll road, from the existing 301 at the Maryland line to Route 1, just north of the Biddles Corner tolls at the Roth Bridge. Total cost of the new road is estimated at $460 million.
The toll to travel the entire road will be $4 for cars and $11 for trucks with five axles. There will be no cash tolls, but the charge will be electronically deducted from EZ Pass.
As for the original Route 301, it will remain open even when the new road is done. There will be three interchanges between the new 301 and the existing 301: an interchange at Levels Road, one north of Middletown, and the other at Jamisons Corner Road. The interchanges will have lesser toll amounts.
Besides the nighttime closures next week, DelDOT has announced other lane closures, road closings, and detours, which are all associated with the construction of the new 301.
Until this Friday, dirt hauling and bridge construction will continue across Summit Bridge Road. Motorists should anticipate a flagging operation on Summit Bridge Road near Marl Pit and Armstrong Corner Roads from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Also, until Friday, construction work will continue across Armstrong Corner Road. Motorists should anticipate flaggers on Armstrong Corner Road between Choptank Road and Summit Bridge Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hyetts Corner Road is closed to traffic between the St. Georges Technical High School and Windsor Commons Way until December 2018, which is the target date for completion of the new 301.
