The fatal collision happened just after midnight this morning, Sept. 30, on Kirkwood Highway.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a hit-and-run collision that killed a pedestrian early this morning, Sept. 30.

The incident occurred around 12:35 a.m., as a 50-year-old Wilmington woman was walking in the vicinity of the intersection of Kirkwood Highway (Route 2) and Farrand Drive. She was seen by witnesses crossing from the south side of Kirkwood Highway toward the north side of the road when she stepped into the path of what was described as a dark-colored pickup truck.

After the collision, the vehicle continued west on Kirkwood Highway without stopping witnesses said.

The 50-year-old victim, who was not carrying a light or crossing in a designated pedestrian crosswalk, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin, police said.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.

Kirkwood Highway in the area of Farrand Drive was closed for about two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
