Accident involved three cars

A Middletown man involved in a multiple vehicle accident in early November on U.S. 13 near Middletown died on Thursday, Nov. 30, state police said.

Robert L. Stevens, 85, was at first taken to Christiana Hospital following the accident but later died from his injuries.

The accident occurred at about 9:54 a.m. on Nov. 2 as a 43-year-old Middletown man was operating a 2017 Honda CRV traveling northbound on U.S 13 in the left lane, north of Pole Bridge Road.

Stevens was driving a 2005 Ford Escape northbound on 13, directly behind the Honda. A third vehicle, a 2003 Ford F450, driven by a 28-year-old Middletown man was also traveling northbound on 13, directly behind the Escape.

The F450 driver failed to come to a stop and struck the rear of the Escape, police said. The Escape was pushed forward, causing it to strike the rear of the Honda.

There were no other injuries in the accident. Both drivers of the other vehicles were wearing their seatbelts.

The operator of the F450 was initially charged with following too closely. Impairment is not suspected as being a contributing factor in this crash.

A police investigation continues.
