Purple Sage Herbs and Gifts, in business for 14 years, has moved two doors down to where the restaurant portion of Immediato’s was located on West Main Street in downtown Middletown.
Elizabeth Barbato, owner, said the new store is 700 square-feet smaller than the previous location and now everything is on one floor. There was merchandise on the second floor at the old location.
“I had knee surgery and I needed to not have stairs anymore [to climb]. We needed a one-floor shop,” Barbato said.
She has lived in Middletown for 30 years and her family has been growing. She’s been married to Michael for 42 years, has two daughters and three grandchildren.
Joelle Bishop continues to manage store. She’s worked there for 10 years and she said the customers are the enjoyable part of the job.
“I love working with our customers and helping them find what they need,” Bishop said.
Last week, the Purple Sage moved and had to temporarily close for a short time. It reopened on Feb. 3 at the new location.
The shop still has a big variety of teas, gifts, and skin care products.
There are 400 different types of loose teas for sale in addition to the tea infusers for brewing and teapots and travel mugs to hold the tea for serving and drinking.
“People are still enjoying loose teas,” Bishop said.
There are still some bagged teas for sale as well as whole bean coffees.
The gifts for sale include Trollbeads for bracelets and necklaces, herbs for culinary and medicinal purposes, essential oils, Tervis tumblers, Rabbit Creek scones and beer bread mixes, wine and martini glasses, Lolita stemware and wine accessories, Tuscan Italian pottery, unusual greeting cards, Silver Spoon Sterling Artisan Jewelry, Lenny and Eva Jewelry designs, Larimar Jewelry, Triloka herbal incense, crystals, relaxing music CDs, and Coventry and Reiki candles and Zum brand name soap bars, candles, and cleaning product.
One of the unusual items is SoleMate Socks where the pairs deliberately don’t match. They almost match. They have similar colors, but the pattern is different.
The store also sells Dr. Hauschka skin care products. Dr. Hauschka has the Natrue certification, which is an international standard for natural and organic skin care. A Natrue certification is awarded exclusively to products that are free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, dyes and petroleum-derived synthetics, and GMOs.
Besides selling products, the store has partnered with Dave Leathrum to offer customers custom picture framing.
The store features time for shopping weekdays and evenings as well as during the day on Saturdays.
The hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The store is closed Sundays.
