Smyrna officers were assisting the Division of Family Services with a home visit in the 500 block of Barley Court off of South Carter Road when a man suspected of being in violation of a court order fled.
A Smyrna police patrol officer was injured while chasing a suspect Thursday, April 19.
At about 1:09 p.m., Smyrna officers responded to assist the Division of Family Services with a home visit in the 500 block of Barley Court off of South Carter Road.
Officials determined a male suspect was in violation of a court order. The man was also suspected to be in possession of illegal drugs, police said.
As officers attempted to take him into custody, he fled on foot.
During the chase, a Smyrna police officer suffered lacerations to his hands from a fence that the suspect jumped over.
Smyrna officers set up a perimeter to conduct a search. With the assistance of the Delaware State Police aviation section and Smyrna police K-9 teams, the suspect was found and taken into custody.
The injured officer was taken to the Bayhealth emergency room where he was treated for lacerations and released, police said.
This investigation is continuing and more details will be released when they become available.
