Daughter of the namesake of the middle school will speak at the next meeting of the Middletown Historical Society. The public is invited.
Everett Meredith Middle School is named for Everett Meredith, a former Middletown educator and administrator.
Patsy Meredith Warner, eldest daughter of Everett Meredith, will be speaking to answer the often asked question, "Who is Everett Meredith?", at the Middletown Historical Society meeting Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m., in the Old Academy Building on 216 N. Broad St.
Research paper contest open to students
The Historical Society is also offering a research paper contest, open to all middle and high school students living in the Appoquinimink School District. Cash prizes are $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for honorable mention.
The research topics will be selected from a list of seven Middletown men and women who participated in the first World War effort, and survived the war.
Papers must be submitted by Saturday, Oct. 20. Winners will be announced at the Historical Society Museum on Sunday, Nov. 11, the 100th anniversary of the World War I armistice.
Rules of the competition and a topic list may be found on the Middletown Historical Society website, www.middletowndehistory.com.
Students who have started or plan to enter the contest should contact David Matsen, email@example.com and state your name, contact email address and phone, and chosen topic to be sure you have all the material the Historical Society has on your selection.
