Students from across the Appoquinimink School District learned about hard work and dedication this summer when they competed in the State Agriscience Fair at the Delaware State Fair in July.
FFA members conducted research projects in their local communities and then prepared a scientific report and display for judging.
Alfred G. Waters Middle School FFA members Michael Capotrio and Ryan VanSant won the team engineering division for grades seven through eight. Their project titled, “Engineering the Impossible: Cultivation Using Hydroponics,” tested different types of hydroponic units to determine which would be most efficient and successful. The students Appoquinimink High School FFA Member Greg Hughes won the individual Environmental Science category for grades seven through nine with his project, “Is All Rain the Same?,” which tested to see if rainfall collected from trees contained pollutants commonly found in the air.
Middletown High School FFA Members Ben Somers and Courtney Capotrio won the team zoology division for grades 10 through 12, with their project, “This Little Piggy Went to Market,” in which they experimented with different techniques of pork production and how behavioral aspects affect pigs’ rate of gain.
Ben, Courtney, Ryan, Michael and Greg will all take their projects to Indianapolis, where they will compete in the National Agriscience Fair at the National FFA Convention this fall.
Also participating in the Agriscience Fair were AGW students Jamar Washington and Landon Carroll, with a team project in botany; Jared Soldo and Cameron Sweisthal with a team project in food science/microbiology; Redding Middle School student Katie Platt with a project in the individual botany division, placing third overall; and RMS students Daniella Restrepo and Kyle Geissler with a team project in the food science/microbiology division.
