They spent months rehearsing and days preparing, but now Middletown High School is ready to bring the characters of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” alive for an all-out spectacular show full of love and compassion.
Based on the 1954 film, starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, this touching story revolves around the lives of two World War II veterans looking to rise to the top of the entertainment world, all the while wooing two beautiful singing sisters traveling to Vermont for the holidays.
“It’s really going to be spectacular,” said Director Amanda Chas. “The singing is gorgeous, the costumes are beautiful and the stage crew has worked hard everyday to make the set look fabulous.”
Chas said although she was nervous about putting on this musical in March, the production is about so much more than the season.
“It’s not a musical about Christmas,” she said. “It’s about being a good person, helping people when they need help and not always putting yourself first.”
Chas said she knew “White Christmas” was for MHS after seeing it on Broadway last year.
“It was just amazing. It was so magical,” she said. “I thought, ‘We have to do this. We can do this.’ ”
Chas said more than 100 students will take part in the spring musical. The production is full of singers and dancers ready to shine on stage.
“The kids have been working really hard to deepen their understanding of the back story and their characters,” she said. “They’re able to relate to the people they’re portraying.”
Senior Jake Degler, who plays Bob Wallace, said the characters in the musical are all very colorful and fun.
“There’s a really good dynamic between Bob and Phil, and also with [the singing sisters] Betty and Judy. They have this almost antagonistic relationship, but at the same time they’re the best of friends.”
Degler said audiences will enjoy the show for its great numbers.
“I feel like for a high school production, it’s amazing,” he said. “Plus, we have an awesome cast this year.”
Mikaila Ryan, who plays Judy Haynes, said she loves her character because she’s so upbeat, but still goes through a lot of different emotions.”
“She’s a lot like me,” Ryan said. “So every time I act, I feel like I’m playing myself, which is a good thing because it’s easy to portray.”
Ryan said the musical provides for a great experience for community members.
“This is actually a lot different than the movie,” she said. “I think it’s going to open up people’s eyes to a whole new type of entertainment.”
