An 18-year-old Middletown man was killed this morning in a 6:44 a.m. car crash on Interstate 495 just south of Route 13 in New Castle.

Delaware State Police said Walter L. Sherlock IV was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado in the left hand northbound lane when his vehicle drove off the west edge of the roadway, crossed the grass median and entered the southbound lanes of I-495. His vehicle was struck on the passenger side by a 2006 Peterbilt tractor trailer operated by Peter Slack, 37, of Berwyn, Pa.

The tractor trailer, hauling a load of mulch, then overturned onto the right hand lane and shoulder of I-495 southbound. Sherlock’s vehicle spun off the roadway and into the grass west of the southbound lanes.

Sherlock was transported to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Slack was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released for minor injuries. State police said both Sherlock and Slack were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The crash is still under investigation. I-495 southbound was closed for approximately six hours as the crash scene was cleared.
